As Melbourne enters into its colder months, heating becomes an essential part of the home.

To keep you and your family warm and toasty, it is important to find a reliable heating solution. If you are looking for a system to heat your entire home, you may find yourself trying to decide between gas ducted heating and multi split systems.

To help you in making the best choice, here are some differences between the two systems.

How do gas ducted heating systems work?

Gas ducted heating is often also known as central heating, as it is commonly used to heat the entire household. This system comprises an internal heating unit that is usually installed into a ceiling cavity, and then ducted throughout the home. Air is drawn into the heating unit and heated up with a gas burner. The warm air is then carried throughout the house via the duct network and released through air grilles or vents that are fixed on the ceiling or floor.

Most gas heaters come with one thermostat control that allows you to set a desired temperature. Once it reaches the target temperature, the gas burner and fan will slowly come to a stop to keep the indoor temperature comfortable.

As gas ducted heating requires ductwork, it is usually best to install when building a new home or during major renovations.

How do multi split systems work?

Multi split systems or multi head split systems are very much like split systems, in that they are made up of two units – an indoor unit that releases conditioned air into the home, and an outdoor unit, which contains the compressor. However, unlike the split system, multi splits allow multiple indoor units to be connected to just one outdoor unit.

Multi split systems are ideal for homes with insufficient ceiling space for ducting, or limited space for outdoor units. With this system, you can easily control individual air conditioners for the desired temperature in different rooms.

You can also choose to start with one or two indoor units, before adding more later on if needed.

Main differences between multi split systems and gas ducted heating

As mentioned above, gas ducted heating requires ductwork and a more involved installation work, which also translates to a larger upfront cost. Multi split systems are cheaper, and, if you need to spread the cost out, can be installed room by room according to your budget.

In terms of running costs, gas is generally considered the cheapest form of heating, especially if you have zoning control. Zoning allows you to heat only the areas that you need to, thus making the system more efficient and better in cost-saving. Without zoning control, multi split systems may be the more cost-effective option as it lets you run the units individually.

The system you choose also depends on the area you want to heat. Multi split systems are effective for small areas or individual rooms. In fact, you can install different indoor units according to needs – for example, a larger capacity unit for a larger room, and a smaller capacity unit for a smaller room. But, if you are looking at heating larger areas or keeping an even temperature throughout the entire house, gas ducted heating is the better choice.

When it comes to aesthetics, gas ducted heating works well with most interior designs as it is not visually intrusive. With only the grilles mounted in the ceiling or floor visible inside the house, it is easily overlooked. Multi split air conditioners are bulky units mounted on the wall, although many new models now come in sleek and modern design.

A quick summary of the differences between the two systems:

Advantages of gas ducted heating systems

Efficient

Low running costs

Zoning control

Only the air grilles are visible in the house

Ideal for heating the entire house or large areas

Advantages of multi split systems

Efficient

Low upfront cost

Can choose each indoor unit according to required capacity

Sleek design

Ideal for heating selected rooms or small spaces

Overall, both gas ducted heating and multi split system heating have their benefits and advantages. Whichever is chosen depends on your preference and needs, as well as other factors such as house design, space availability, and more.

Dale Air – melbourne’s Gas Ducted Heating Installation & Replacement Experts – 1300 301 665

Most people do not give their ducted gas heating systems much thought after the initial installation, perhaps expecting the heaters to last forever. However, like most other household appliances, ducted gas heaters do have a lifespan.

Old gas heaters may have issues that are hard to fix or parts that are hard to find. Or worse, they may present health risks such as carbon monoxide poisoning to you and your family.

So, how long does a ducted gas heater last?

In general, a ducted gas heating system that is well maintained can probably last from 10 to 20 years, with an average lifespan of 15 years. However, there are several factors that can affect the lifespan of these heaters:

Quality

A high quality heating system will definitely last longer than a lower quality one. It is recommended that you purchase your heating system from reputable brands in the market, as these usually have a good track record with product quality. You should also check if your ducted heating system comes with a manufacturer’s warranty of 5 or more years.

Model

Some older ducted heater models have heavy gauge metal heat exchangers. These are very durable and can last as long as 30 years. However, these older models are very inefficient. Most modern models are now equipped with steel heat exchangers that are constructed with aluminized or stainless metal. These are much more efficient, and, although less durable than the older models, they can still last for about 15 to 20 years if properly maintained.

Maintenance

One way to keep your ducted heater lasting longer is to have regular maintenance done by a qualified technician. The technician will be able to check that all components are running smoothly and fix any issues before they escalate into bigger problems. Return air filters should also be cleaned regularly to maintain the unit’s efficiency and prolong its lifespan.

When should you replace your ducted gas heating unit?

No matter how well you maintain your heater and prolong its lifespan, there will come a time when you need to replace your unit.

Here are some signs you can look out for to know if you should buy a new heater:

Unit is older than 15 years

Any ducted gas heating unit that is older than 15 years should be replaced, especially if it is not well maintained. Older models are not as efficient as newer models, plus they tend to get more problems that may be harder and more expensive to fix as the years go by.

Rising frequency of repairs

If you find that your heating system is breaking down all the time and the technician is at your house way too often to look at yet another issue with your heater, then it is probably worth changing or upgrading the system. A new unit, although expensive upfront, will ultimately save you the mounting repair bills as well as the inconveniences of a problematic heater.

High energy bills

An old heating system that is not as energy efficient as it should be, means higher gas or electricity bills for you. If you’ve been noticing an uptrend in your bills even though there has not been much change in your heater usage, consider purchasing a new unit. With an upgrade to a higher efficiency model, you will definitely see a substantial reduction in your energy bills.

New, energy efficient ducted gas heaters in Melbourne

If your ducted gas heating system ticks all the boxes above, then it is time for you to switch over.

At Dale Air, we will help you choose a new heater that suits your budget and requirement.
Many parts of Australia, including Melbourne and Sydney, have been blanketed by smoke haze due to the devastating bushfires.

The air quality in some areas of NSW and Victoria dropped to a very poor or hazardous rating multiple times this Summer and authorities have advised those who live in affected areas to limit their time spent outdoors.

Poor air quality is a health risk to vulnerable groups including older people, children, pregnant women, those suffering from asthma and allergies as well as people with existing heart or lung conditions.

However, doctors have warned that even people who are otherwise healthy could be negatively affected by prolonged exposure to smoke haze, and develop serious illnesses over time.

Poor air quality can cause some of the following symptoms:

Coughing, wheezing, chest congestion, shortness of breath or other respiratory issues

Allergic episodes such as itching, sneezing and irritation

Watery eyes

Headaches, fatigue or dizziness

Skin dryness or irritation

When the air quality reaches very poor or hazardous rating, we are advised to stay indoors as much as possible with their doors and windows closed.

How do you ensure, however, that the air quality inside the buildings and homes remain healthy and safe?

Using air conditioners to keep smoke out

As the air quality deteriorates, many experts and authorities will recommend that people stay inside their homes with doors and windows shut, and with the air conditioner turned on.

It is important to remember, however, to turn off the ‘Fresh Air’ function on your air conditioner if it has one, because this feature draws air from outside into the home, which is what you do not want at this moment.

Similarly, you should avoid using evaporative cooling systems when experiencing smoke haze, as it may bring in the smoke that you want to keep out.

Make sure your air conditioner is switched to the recirculate mode, so that it recycles indoor air instead of taking in outside air.

Many modern reverse cycle split system models come with good air filtration and purifying systems, so they can actually improve your indoor air quality while keeping you cool at the same time.

Some of the Daikin air conditioners, for example, come with an advanced deodorising air purification filter that traps microscopic particles and decomposes odours. This not only cleanses the air but will also help to eliminate some of the overpowering smoke smell within your home.

Other features include humidification, dehumidification and ventilating capabilities to keep the air comfortable for you and your family.

Daikin split systems such as the US7 have also been approved by the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice program, making them an especially good option for those suffering from asthma and allergies.

Other ways to protect yourself from smoke haze

Besides running the air conditioner, here are some other things you can do:

Get an air purifier with HEPA filter

Try to spend time inside buildings with better air filtration systems, such as offices or shopping centres

If possible, temporarily relocate to another area where the air quality is not as bad

Some things to avoid doing when the air quality is poor include: exercising outside, and burning incense sticks in an attempt to get rid of the smell of the smoke.

As summer rolls in, many are turning to their air conditioning system to keep a cool and comfortable indoor environment. This, however, may also mean higher energy consumption and expensive energy bills.

To help lower your energy bills this summer, here are some ways to use your cooling system more efficiently:

Set the right temperature

It is recommended that you set your air conditioner thermostat between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius for living areas during summer. Setting a lower-than-needed temperature on your thermostat does not necessarily make your air conditioner cool faster, but it definitely makes it work harder and therefore cost more. In fact, every degree lower can increase running costs by as much as 10 percent.

Clean the air filters

One simple way to ensure that your air conditioner continues to perform efficiently is by cleaning the air filters regularly. An air filter that is dirty and clogged with dust makes the system work harder, which means more power is used and this in turn raises the energy costs. How often filters should be cleaned depends on a few factors including frequency of use, but generally filters should be cleaned or replaced at least once every few months.

Service your system regularly

Getting your air conditioning system serviced regularly will ensure that your unit continues to perform as effectively as it should. A professional technician will also be able to check that all ducting is free of air leaks, and alert you to any damages, avoiding bigger and costlier breakdowns.

Use fans as well

Instead of setting a low temperature on the thermostat, consider using fans with your air conditioners to circulate cool air more evenly around the room. Due to the wind chill effect, fans can make the space feel cooler than it actually is. This also allows you to raise the thermostat by as much as four degrees without feeling much discomfort, and in doing so, save money.

Check the windows and doors

If you are using evaporative cooling systems, keep your doors and windows open large enough to allow the air to flow outside. Insufficient openings will actually reduce the unit’s cooling effectiveness, and may overwork the fan. However, if you are using other air conditioning systems such as split systems, ensure that all windows and doors are closed.

Keep the heat out

Do not underestimate the heat that comes into your home through uncovered windows during hot days. Use curtains, shades, shutters or other exterior coverings on your windows to keep the summer heat out. This helps the house to stay cooler than outside, which in turn means your air conditioner will not need to work as hard.

Don’t forget the outdoor unit

If the outdoor unit (or compressor unit) is fully exposed to the sun during the day, try to shade it with an awning or something similar. However, make sure it is not blocked by plants or covered with dust and debris, because restricted air circulation around the unit will not only increase power consumption but may also lead to permanent damage.

Turn it off when not using

Finally, do not forget to turn your air conditioner off when you are not using it. According to research by Finder.com.au, almost 1 in 4 Australian households leave their air conditioning running for up to an hour even when they are not home. It is actually cheaper to turn the system off when you are out and on again when you come back.
